Mural.ly: We Are The Problem

This picture represents how over fishing can just destroy all population in a coral reef. All that white rocky stuff in the background used to be a vast and beautiful and living coral reef.

The Swaying Waves
As I swayed with the waves
So Helplessly,
I watched and waited
As this thing approached me?
I wondered to myself what is that?
What could this thing possibly be?
But as it turns out that thing
Yes it is a jellyfish

Ah, yes, the jellyfish
As it sways throughout the ocean
With no signs of motion
As I explain to myself
There is no real danger
My mind starts to flow away from me
As my mind goes to the jellyfish vaguely
My mind follows him throughout the vast deep ocean
But can you follow him with not a lot of motion?

As the jellyfish approaches this giant structure, looking like a city
He floats and wonders “what could this possibly be?”
There are fish everywhere and in every crevice
“This is yes, a coral reef!”

As he floats on still through this beautiful city so, so helplessly
Something starts to crack and crumble
He looks over at the lively city, but nothing’s happening
What was that sound he wonders and waits?
But, eventually moves on with his day
                                                                He hears it again….
And out of the corner of his eye
He sees something very dangerous and could cause him to die
He sees movement and a mushroom cloud of sand
He is scared he can’t move but he stops and thinks I
                                                                I am just a mere jellyfish….

He continues on with the current
But he hears this sound again not like before though
This sound is LOUDER AND LOUDER!!!
And then everything is black,
He can’t see any more or hear any more or think any more
                                                                There is nothing

My mind has come back now
I was just daydreaming
I am still floating waiting for the perfect wave
But, I decided I should go because there is a problem in that ocean
Because in that beautiful, vast ocean there are real problems

Rather than our unequal commotions

Dear Editor and Chief:
My Name is Eric Stearns. I am a sophomore at Early College High School in Conway, South Carolina.
I am writing to address the massive problem of destruction and bleaching of coral reefs.
The problem we are having with coral reefs is very serious and not to be taken lightly. The problem with coral reefs is that they are dying off. Over the past years the world has lost more than 20 different coral reefs. We use coral reefs for so many different things from coral reefs, like 50 percent of chemicals that we use in our everyday medicine such as Benadryl, and Tylenol. One of the biggest reasons coral reefs are breaking down is because of the most dominant animal on this planet, us. We dump, drill, everything in the ocean every day, so I ask you to take a good look at what you are doing, and help. With adequate time and care for these beautiful coral reefs, I think we can change the world

Thank you so much for your time and I would hope to hear from you soon
                                                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                                                            Eric Stearns

We are the problem
Who is the Victim and who is the problem? This question is commonly asked by scientists every single day. Are we the problem? Is asked by people every day. Could we help this if we all stop over fishing and polluting the water?  All throughout my life I have swam and played in the ocean my whole life. As I have played throughout the ocean in my small years, I have noticed that the water has started to become more and more disgusting as the year’s progressed. We are the problem and we need to fix it. Why should the coral reef restoration committee help restore the coral reefs? The answer to this is simple; yes they need to help because reefs around the world are being killed off to extinction. We need to help.
Why should the Coral Reef Restoration Committee help protect the reefs? The Coral Reef Restoration Committee needs to help us out with our coral reef destruction problem because there are beautiful and needed coral reefs all a crossed the world. To save a Reef states “the amount of coral reef break down have three folded in the last years since 1997”(Halaby 2). This is very important to know because if we don’t we have no way to know what to save or what to do about it. We all just need to stop for a moment and think what will happen if we don’t stop polluting or over fishing in our waters. Some of the consequences that will unfold are that fish will not be caught; no fish means that the sharks will try and find some other kind of life source to feed on closer to shore. We need to help.
One of the things I don’t like most about this destruction of the coral reefs is that some people don’t even know or care. In life and death of coral reefs states “this occurrence of the coral reefs dying will be just like the grey wolf incident, the grey wolves went extinct and then the elk population in the mountains started to multiply rapidly because there was no one to hunt and kill them, after the elk population got bigger more red wood trees started to die because elk like to rub there antlers against the trees so they contracted a disease and the trees started to die, and this just goes on and on.” This is very important to all the people who think coral reefs are not important because this is going to happen to us! Also in Life and Deaths on Coral Reefs they state, “if we do not help the coral reefs then the fish will start to die and the country’s that rely on fish to support their economy will go poor and not have as much money anymore.”(Smith 5) This is very important to us because we do rely some on our fishing in the United States so we need to help, or we will end up losing even more money than we already have.
I would like to do a lot of further research on the destruction of coral reefs, because I think that people should deserve to know what is happening to their place of life. Also, because I think this could impact our economy and our homes majorly. Not every coral reef in the world is breaking down, but some most reefs are breaking down that we need that we need. A possible argument would be: why do I care, or how does this affect me? Well it does because we need fish for food so our debt will go up if we don’t catch and sell fish to other countries. This is an important topic; just think what if it was you?
